Choosing Sides Before You Belong

Rahab's faith is not built on years of teaching. It is not formed inside the covenant community. It is a response to what she knows—right then. That's what sets her apart.
Choosing Sides Before You Belong

Hebrews 11:31
“By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.”

Our initial reaction is... Rahab does not belong in this list.

She is not an Israelite.
She is not part of the covenant.
She lives inside a city marked for destruction.

And yet—she sees clearly.

While the rest of Jericho hears about Israel’s God and hardens their hearts, Rahab responds differently. She recognizes what others ignore:

The God of Israel is the true God.

And that recognition forces a decision.

Rahab chooses sides.

She hides the spies, risking her life in the process. She turns against her own city, her own people, her own past—because she has come to believe something about God that she cannot ignore.

Her faith is not built on years of teaching.
It is not formed inside the covenant community.

It is a response to what she knows—right now. And she acts on it. That is what sets her apart.

Rahab does not wait until she “belongs” to act faithfully. She aligns herself with God before everything is settled, before her identity is redefined, before the outcome is guaranteed.

She ties a scarlet cord in her window—a visible marker of trust in the middle of a city headed toward judgment.

And when the walls fall, she stands.

Not because she had all the answers.
But because she responded to the truth she had.

Faith, for Rahab, is immediate and decisive.

It is the courage to step into God’s story—even when it costs you everything familiar.

Reflection:
Where might God be calling you to align with Him before everything in your life feels settled or secure?

Prayer:
Lord, there is such a great lesson to learn from Rahab. Help us to trust You in the big things and the seemingly small things, knowing that You can use us even when our faith is minuscule—as small as a mustard seed. You have a plan for every life, a destiny and purpose for us all, even the Rahabs among us, who we assume are unfit for Your use. Amen.
