Walking in Truth
Consider the English Standard Version's interpretation of today's verse (above) with greater context:
"Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." (3 Jn 2–4)
It's important we understand prosperity as the Bible teaches in our verse for today:
- Prosperity. To prosper. From the Greek word euodoo; it literally means to help on the road, speaking of a journey.
Have you ever wondered why the Bible encourages prosperity when so many have struggled with the issue throughout their lives? There are many factors that may contribute to a person's inability to experience a financial breakthrough. But we tend to forget that prosperity is a journey. It starts at one point and passes through much adversity until the individual finds himself truly prosperous.
Sadly, a common mistake is thinking that prosperity is only or primarily associated with monetary gain.
We also need to remember that financial prosperity is not God's ultimate goal for His people ... euodoo (prosperity=to help on the road), on the other hand, is His desire for each of us.
Prosperity comes in many flavors and sizes. To be prosperous could mean having your immediate needs met. But it doesn't stop there.
Growing in a relationship with God.
Continually seeking God in His Word.
Living peaceably with your neighbors.
Growing in faithful allegiance to God.
Building a happy home.
Nurturing good health.
While we are all on a journey toward true prosperity, some of us are farther along than others.
We need to remember that if we are following in the Lord’s footsteps as His disciples, we are on the path to true prosperity—the kind our verse today refers to.
Take a few moments each day to thank the Lord for making it possible for you to be on the path toward true prosperity … physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Cling to Him while on your journey.
He will prosper you in ways that please Him most.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to remember always that true prosperity is more than just money, but it is forging forward on a path to become rich in the things of God, in my family and home, in whichever way brings the most glory to You. Because of You alone, I am prosperous! Amen!
“He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.” (Psalm 1:3)
