Psalm 1 Series (Part 6)

“…And on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2)
Psalm 1 Series (Part 6)

The Psalmist made a point to remind us to delight ourselves in the “law of the Lord”. But he doesn't stop there! Look at the last part of the verse in context: “Blessed is the man who… on his law he mediates day and night.”

What does it mean to you to “meditate” on God’s Word “day and night”?

Many years ago, I found it difficult to meditate on what I didn't truly delight in. To me, reading and meditating on God's Word was simply fulfilling a sense of obligation I felt to read daily.

After seeking the Lord through prayer and close self-examination of my own heart, I concluded that my motive was the problem.  And, when I fixed that problem, there was suddenly delight in reading the Word.  And, when I delighted in the Word, it became a natural response to meditate on it day and night.

You can't delight yourself in something if you feel it is a burden or an obligation.  If you don't like liver and onions, you aren’t going to eat it every day with any sense of enjoyment or delight. You may eat it because it’s good for you, or it’s put on the table in front of you, but there will be no sense of true satisfaction or delight.  You’ll leave the table craving something better to eat, something that tastes better—something you look forward to eating.

If we're not digesting the Word, we'll not find true satisfaction during our time of study. Our time in the Word should nourish our spirit, strengthen us, and lead us deeper into communion with the Lord.

As we grow in the Word, we will find ourselves meditating on it day and night – it will literally capture our thoughts and replace them with God’s thoughts.

Our thoughts will no longer satisfy us; true satisfaction will come from meditation on the Word—letting its sweetness linger as we go through our day.

The Word renews our minds, changes our thoughts, and brings forth fruit in our lives—fruit fit for a King’s table.  Our thoughts and words should be like a fountain of life to others as they bubble up from deep within us.

Meditating on the Word makes our decision-making process so much easier. The Holy Spirit brings the answers to our minds when we need them.

Making right or good decisions–decisions that will impact our lives and the lives of our loved ones–is impossible if we don’t know what God says about it.

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night... (Joshua 1:8)

Meditate on His Word, day and night.

Love His Word, and

Live His Word.

Reflection
Do you ever feel guilty for not studying the Word of God regularly? How often do you purposely meditate on God's Word? How willing are you to change your habits to draw closer to the Lord?

Prayer
Father, as much as I try to discipline myself, I often fail. Are my motives wrong? Help me grow to truly love Your Word, meditate on it day and night, and live Your Word. I want to be a Psalm One "Blessed" man/woman. Amen.
