Holy Wednesday
By midweek, the tension had reached its peak. The accusations had not subsided—they had intensified.
Some said He was deceived.
Others claimed He was dangerous.
Still others twisted the truth, determined to convince the leaders that Jesus must be stopped.
This was no longer questioning. This was determination.
Behind closed doors, the religious leaders gathered. Not to seek truth. But to protect what they feared losing.
“What are we to do? For this man performs many signs… If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him…” (John 11:47–48)
Although they were nearly frantic, they could not deny what He had done. They simply refused to believe what it meant.
And then Caiaphas spoke—words that carried more truth than he understood:
“It is better for you that one man should die for the people…” (John 11:50)
What was spoken as strategy… was, in fact, prophecy. From that moment on, the decision was made. Jesus would die.
But while plans of death were forming in secret…something sacred was unfolding in the open.
In Bethany, Jesus sat among friends. And Mary came. With no announcement. No invitation. No hesitation. Only pure devotion. She broke open an alabaster jar—costly… extravagant… unnecessary, some would say—and poured it out on Him.
Love… without restraint.
Honor… without calculation.
And Jesus received it. Not as waste. But as preparation.
“She has done it to prepare me for burial.”
While others plotted His death… Mary understood something they did not.
And then—another quiet movement in the shadows. Judas. One of the twelve. Close enough to walk beside Him… yet distant enough to betray Him.
He went to the chief priests. And for thirty pieces of silver, he offered to hand Jesus over.
Now they had what they needed. No more searching. No more waiting. No more plotting. The plan was in place.
And Jesus?
He was not surprised. Not shaken. Not undone.
Everything unfolding around Him was exactly what He had already surrendered Himself to.
🌿 Reflection
There are many ways to be near Jesus and still miss Him.
The leaders saw the signs—but chose control.
Judas walked beside Him—but chose thirty pieces of silver.
Mary saw what others did not—and gave what she could not keep.
And the question that gently requires an answer—
What does my response look like?
🙏 Prayer
Lord, help me keep my heart from drifting close… yet remaining distant. Guard me from resisting what I recognize… from valuing what will not last. Give me the heart of Mary—to pour out what is costly, to honor You without restraint, to see what truly matters. Even when others do not. Amen.
