Are You Alive?

He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (1 John 5:12)

Summer is just around the corner. But before we get there, we're still in the throes of Spring, complete with temperature changes, thunderstorms, and a mixture of beautiful sunny days and gloomy frosty mornings.

The sun provides the necessary light for life to exist. Without the sun, the earth would be cold and barren.

Likewise, without the Son, the heart of man is cold and barren. You can be as good as you will, sweet, kind, polite, moral, ethical, wonderful, but if you don't have the Son, you don't have life.

This life that John is talking about is to be alive or being quickened.

This life implies that one who was once dead is made alive or given life.

Ephesians 2:5-7 explains the life John is talking about:

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”

If we do not have the Son, we are dead in sin and no different than the barren and cold earth without the sun.

Jesus, our Lord, took our cold and barren hearts,
He quickened us and gave us life.

What kind of life? John 10:10 tells us plainly,

I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

The emphasis is on life–the abundant life that comes only through the Son.

A life bearing fruit,
A life glorying in its Creator—this is abundant life.

Abundant life is life that exceeds anything you could ask or think–life that is superior in quality, though not measured by things or possessions.

It’s the quality of life–the God-breathed and Spirit-quickened life, the kind of life that exists only in the light of the Son.

Give glory to the Creator as you read Paul’s words to the Ephesians, rejoicing with him and acknowledging the source of this abundant life:

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Do you have the Son?

Then you have life—abundant life that is far superior to life that is cold and barren, life that is extraordinary, surpassing all you could ever imagine, and more than enough.

That’s the life the Son has given you.
That’s life more abundantly.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for life–for perfect, excellent, and exceedingly abundant life in Christ Jesus. Amen.

“Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction. I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.” (Psalm 119:92-93)
