Tobias Henderson

Inspiration for this poem came from a recent news report of a police officer killed in the line of duty, leaving a young wife and new baby. The story broke my heart!

Little boy, my newborn son,
I wonder what you’ll be.
Will you be a carpenter,
Or have a law degree?

Will you drive a red sports car,
Or will you ride a bike?
Will you sit behind a desk,
Or will you work outside?

Little boy, my precious son,
You’ve only just begun.
Mommy sees you years from now
So proud that you’re her son!

Little boy, my newborn son,
I wonder what you’ll be.
Will you be a football fan,
Or sail the shining seas?

Will you like to hike and run,
Or own your own café?
Will you get good grades in school,
I know you’ll love to play!

Little boy, my precious son,
You’ve only just begun.
You have your life ahead of you
There’s so much to be done!

Little boy, my newborn son,
I wonder what you’ll be.
Will you be just like your dad
To please both him and me?

Daddy in his uniform,
Made Mommy very proud
Watching him help young and old,
Enforce the laws, he vowed.

Little boy, my precious son,
You’ve only just begun.
But deep within your newborn eyes
I see your Daddy’s son.

Little boy, my newborn son,
I wonder what you’ll be.
Son of Sergeant Henderson,
It matters not to me.

I wish Dad could see you now,
How proud I know he’d be!
Selflessly he gave his life …
No greater legacy.

Little boy, my precious son,
You’ve only just begun.
Together we will trust the Lord
From dawn to setting sun.

Little boy, my newborn son,
I wonder what you’ll be.
God will lead us day by day,
And He will meet our needs.

I will teach you how to pray,
We’ll call upon His Name.
Trusting Him for daily bread,
His promises we’ll claim.

Little boy, my precious son,
You’ve only just begun.
To carry on your daddy’s name,
Tobias Henderson.
