The Name of God

The name of God is not merely a title. It is a revelation.

In Scripture, His name speaks of His nature, His character, and His presence. When God made Himself known, He did not simply reveal information about Himself—He unveiled who He is. His name carried weight. Holiness. Nearness. Authority. Wonder.

When Moses asked God what he should say to the people, God answered, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14).

Not I was. Not I will become. But I AM—eternal, self-existent, unchanging, complete in Himself.

The God who has no beginning and no ending. The God who depends on no one, yet sustains everyone.

Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through names that meet His people in the midst of their need:

Jehovah Jireh — The Lord will provide.
Jehovah Rapha — The Lord who heals.
Jehovah Shalom — The Lord is peace.
Jehovah Nissi — The Lord my banner.
Jehovah Rohi — The Lord my shepherd.

Each name is like a window opening, allowing us to see directly into His heart.

And consider the name above all names... Jesus.

He is called ImmanuelGod with us.
Not distant. Not unreachable. Not hidden behind ritual and shadow. God with us.

In Jesus, the name of God moved beyond information and tradition, and into nearness. The eternal I AM stepped into flesh, walked among us, touched the broken, called the weary, and made the Father known. No wonder Jesus said, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). He was not only speaking of age. He was declaring identity.

The name of God is sacred because God Himself is sacred. His name is not common because He is not common. It is to be honored, loved, trusted, and worshiped.

But there is something deeply comforting here, too: the God whose name is holy also invites us to call upon Him.

His name is...
Strong enough for our battles.
Gentle enough for our grief.
Near enough for our whispered prayers.
Holy enough to bow before.
Personal enough to know.

We do not serve an unknown God.

We know His name through His Word.
We know His heart through His Son.
We bear His name as ambassadors of His Kingdom.
And we carry His name as His people.

Maybe that is why the psalmist wrote, “Those who know Your name will put their trust in You” (Psalm 9:10).

To know His name is to know that He is faithful.
To know His name is to know that He sees.
To know His name is to know that He remains who He has always been and who He will always be.

And whatever this day holds, I AM still is.

🙏 Prayer

Lord, thank You for making Yourself known to me. Teach me to trust Your name, rest in Your character, and reflect Your heart in my life. You are everything You have revealed Yourself to be—and You are enough. Amen.
