On the Mountain

The hard places, the higher places, the set-apart places. Where God speaks, where we seek, and where we are changed.

In the New Testament, mountains were more than scenery—they were sacred spaces of encounter. Here are some specific examples of Jesus' activity on the mountains.

đź“–
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them. (Matthew 5:1-2)

Jesus went up a mountain, and He preached the "Sermon on the Mount". His disciples came to Him, and He began to open His mouth and reveal the heart of God with the Beautitudes.

đź“–
In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. (Luke 6:12)

Now we see Jesus going out to a mountain to pray. In the quiet elevation above the noise, the busyness, the crowds, He communed with His Father through the night. This sacred encounter led to a most profound decision the next morning when He chose His twelve disciples from the crowd of followers that had been with Him.

đź“–
... he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white... (Luke 9:28-36)

He went up a mountain, and He was transfigured. The splendor that once was veiled became visible. Glory broke through.

When Jesus encountered a mountain, He preached, He prayed, and He was changed.

And so it is with us.

The “mountains” in our lives are not accidents. They are invitations.

Places where we are lifted above distraction…
where our perspective is realigned…
where heaven seems just a little closer.

On the mountain, we learn to hear His Word more clearly.
On the mountain, we are drawn to seek Him more deeply.
On the mountain, we are transformed more fully.

We often resist the climb—but the climb leads to where the encounter waits.

Don’t rush past the mountain.
Don’t resent the height.
Go up.

Because it is there—
in the preaching,
in the praying,
in the transforming—
that we begin to reflect His glory.

Prayer

Father, help me see the mountains in my life as a call to draw closer to You, so I can continue to be transformed to reflect Your glory. Amen!
