Laundry Basics: Part Seven
After spending time at the store, looking at labels on a wide variety of laundry detergents, I have found the instructions to also be applicable to our spiritual lives. With the cost of clothes these days, we don't want to ruin them by taking shortcuts or failing to follow the instructions. And, so it is with our lives as Christians. There are no shortcuts; the instructions are clear. The price is too great not to pay close attention to the Instruction Manual.
So let’s review what we've learned about tough stains in our laundry basket.
🧺 Sort the laundry
Prepare your minds for action!
As you sort, you plan how to attack the chore. As you prepare your mind for action, you plan how to approach the Christian walk with readiness at all times.
🧺 Follow the care instructions
Be self-controlled
Pay careful attention to the manufacturer’s instructions for laundering your garments. Our “Manufacturer” gave us specific instructions on how to live a self-controlled life, all of which are clearly laid out in His Word.
🧺 Choose the right approach
Set your hope
Just as you carefully select and set the right cycle and temperature for the garments you’re washing, you are to set your hope with careful planning. We need to pay close attention to the word “set”, likening it to the dial on our washing machine. Choose your hope (Christ Jesus) and “set” it there for the best cleansing results.
🧺 Don’t overload the machine
Don’t conform to evil desires
Just as we don’t want to overload our washing machines (which prevents thorough cleansing), we don’t want to overload our lives with things that don’t belong there. If we want to live a pure life, we must carefully select our desires, just as we would select the right clothing for the wash load.
🧺 Be sure the detergent and bleach are thoroughly dissolved
Be holy in all you do
The keyword is “thoroughly.” In order for our hearts to be purified and our souls cleansed, we have to be thorough in our approach to living a holy life!
🧺 Wash delicates separately
Live your lives in reverent fear
Separation is the key—living as though you are not a citizen of the world but of Heaven. Just as we would separate our delicates from the “normal” wash, God would separate us unto Himself to be washed and cleansed from all stains with the soul-cleansing Blood of the Lamb!
Peter goes on to tell us that these steps will purify our souls as we obey these Truths through the power of the Spirit. He sums up the chapter with these words that I love:
“But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
Peter was a laundry expert, not of washing clothes, but of washing our souls by the Word of God, which abides forever! He reminds us that we are born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God. Our cleansing is not by artificial detergents, but by the pure Word of God, the shed blood of the Lamb! Hallelujah!
🧺 In order for our hearts to be purified and our souls cleansed, we have to be thorough in our approach to living a holy life!
PRAYER
Father, oh Lord, we need Your cleansing! Help us, Father, to heed Your unchanging eternal Truth, and to align our lives with Your Word. Father, forgive us for ignoring our responsibility as Ambassadors of Heaven, sent on assignment to this world. Show us how to live a life pleasing to You and to represent the Kingdom of Heaven.
Remind us throughout our days that we have a responsibility to ourselves, but, more importantly, to You, to live according to the calling You have given us. Help us to resist the stain of sin and plunge us once again in the cleansing stream that flows from Calvary. Teach us to resist the “resistors” in life by taking heed to Your Word.
Purify our hearts, O God, and be glorified as the blood of Christ does its cleansing work in us.
In Jesus’ precious Name, Amen and Amen!
