Knowing Him
In ancient world cultures, the shepherd and the sheep had a unique connection. Understanding that relationship will help us grow in our relationship with the Great Shepherd.
The relationship between a sheep and its shepherd was one of total submission, humility, and surrender, following the Shepherd's instructions and walking the path the Shepherd directed.
Jesus Christ, our Shepherd, knows us better than we know ourselves, inside and out. He knows our hearts, our motives, our strengths, and our weaknesses. As sheep in His fold, we, too, must strive to know Him just as personally. The only way we can do this is to grow daily in our relationship with Him, allowing our lives to be influenced by the Word of God.
Learn to know Him. Spend time with Him. Talk to Him. Include Him in all your daily activities. Remember, He’s a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He’s never more than a thought away. Open your Bible and learn His love for you. Become acquainted with His personality—you’ll soon be known by others by the company you keep.
Sheep lived in complete dependence upon their shepherd. They knew his voice and trusted it, followed his lead, and remained under his watchful care. Without him, they would wander, become lost, or fall prey to danger.
And, so it is with us. Spend time each day in His Word. Allow it to influence your life as you grow to know the Great Shepherd, as He knows you.
Prayer
Lord, my soul longs to know You as You know me, to hear Your voice above all others, and to walk in the path You have set before me. Lead me, O Shepherd, protect me, guide me, and feed me through Your Word as I hide it in my heart in daily communion with You. Amen.
