Don't Go Back

You've been called out... Not into a list of rules, but into a relationship that totally redefines you.
Don't Go Back

This is Part Three of a Seven-Part series on 1 Peter 1:13-19. Follow along closely – remember who you are, and Whose you are!

📖
"As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance." (1 Peter 1:14)

This passage from the first chapter of 1 Peter really hits home!

Former ignorance. Woah! That's not very palatable. Peter isn't being unkind — he's being honest. Before we knew the Father, we chased things and did things we thought would make us happy. We shaped our lives around appetites and desires that never quite satisfied us. Perhaps we simply didn't know better. Or, maybe we did but chose to ignore it.

But now we know.

And that changes everything about how we move forward.

"Do not be conformed" conveys the idea of being pressed into a mold — we've been shaped by outside forces into something uncomfortable — we no longer fit. But the old life doesn't always let go easily.

You've been called out of that. Not into a list of rules, but into a relationship that is redefining you. It takes time. It takes effort. It takes prayer. It takes surrender. It takes being a faithful disciple of Jesus. It takes living under the influence of the Word of God.

The passions of your former life have now become the mold in which you no longer fit. The closer you grow to the Lord, the more uncomfortable the old ways become. You don't live there anymore. You don't fit into the former mold you once lived in. You've changed. You're not who you once were.

You're a new creature, formed in the image of your Creator. He has become the mold we are growing into.

Prayer

Lord, to be really honest, the old patterns are still familiar sometimes. The old pull can be so strong at times. Remind me always who I am now — and whose I am. I don't want to go back to all that You called me out of. With Your help and in Your strength, I won't go back. Amen.
